LCS Families --
In the wake of the recent unfortunate tragedy in Georgia, we thought it would be important to reiterate a few items surrounding the situation at Apalachee High School.
First, our hearts are with the students, families, staff, and community members affected by this incomprehensible violent act.
As parents, we understand that after events like this, feelings of fear and uncertainty around school safety may arise. Your students may experience feelings of confusion, sadness, helplessness, anger, anxiety, and fear as they try to make sense of the news in the world around them.
Please know that student safety is always our No. 1 priority. Always. That is our commitment to you as parents.
We offer counseling and mental health resources for students, staff, and families. We encourage you to reach out to your child's school if they are struggling with fear or anxiety. We are here to help.
Other resources that may help with family conversations:
American Psychological Association – How to talk to children about difficult news
National Association of School Psychologists – Talking to children about violence, Supporting children’s mental wellness

We want to keep the lines of communication open. If you have any concerns or suggestions regarding school safety, please do not hesitate to contact us. It is important for us to work together as a community.
As part of our commitment to school safety, we have several protocols in place including secure access to our buildings, regular safety drills, and strong partnerships with local law enforcement. At the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, we sent out a school safety update presentation. If you have any questions about what we are doing or have done regarding school safety, this is a good resource for you to review.
We all have a role in ensuring our schools remain safe. Please talk to your children about the importance of speaking up if they see or hear anything concerning. Together, we can create an environment where everyone feels safe.
If your student sees anything that they feel needs to be reported as a potential threat, they can utilize OK2SAY to submit a tip. Anyone can report tips confidentially on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools at www.michigan.gov/ok2say, text 652729 (OK2SAY) or by phone to 8-555-OK2SAY (855-565-2729). School officials and local law enforcement are notified immediately once a tip has been submitted. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
For emergencies, always dial 911.
Overall, our schools are places where children should feel safe and secure. We are committed to making that a reality every day. Together, we will work to protect our children and create a community of care, vigilance, and resilience.
Thank you,
Matt Wandrie
